SK: Their friendship speaks to her broader life philosophy, which is that you can have principles that really matter to you, and you’re working toward achieving them, but she really cares deeply about meeting people halfway. They go to the opera together, and their families have spent holidays together. One thing I think a lot of people have a hard time understanding about RBG is how she could be friends with Justice Scalia – who’s more or less her ideological opposite on the Court. I think the biggest challenge was showing more than an internet meme but including that spirit of the internet while telling a serious story.But at the same time, so much of her persona, so much of how she actually sees the work she’s doing and getting done, is by making compromises, by being tactical, by being pragmatic, and trying to figure out: What is the long-term strategy? How are we going to move toward a society that is more equal, more egalitarian, but without alienating the people who may disagree with you along the way?

We also wanted it to have that scrapbook feeling. Details like these give the Justice dimension in Notorious RBG, co-written by Irin Carmon, an MSNBC reporter, and blogger and lawyer Shana Knizhnik.The book grew out of Knizhnik’s blog. So we wanted our book to be one you could read and get a character and narrative from. The interest was so intense and fantastic, and we knew there was more to do. My co-author, Shana, had started the Notorious RBG blog in 2013, which was inspired by several of RBG's dissenting opinions, and from there came the Notorious RBG Tumblr. We wanted to capture a serious person, but we also wanted to have fun. What was the biggest challenge in the creation process for The Notorious RBG? I think about it in the context of Ruth Bader Ginsberg because she always will say that she took her mother's advice to not get angry, but at the same time, underlying in her work was a quiet anger that she turned into action. Rebecca argues that we underestimate the power of women's anger, in history and in current times.
